The ITR designed Modern Burner Unit (MBU NSN #7310-01-507-9370) is currently used in army field feeding systems. The MBU maintains the footprint and heat transfer of previous field burner units, and requires no modifications to military issue field kitchen appliances, while meeting all military performance specifications.
The MBU utilizes an automatic, closed circuit fueling system, which avoids spill hazards and eliminates the need to remove the burner for refueling. Employing an electronic ignition, the MBU is ignited in place, saving time by eliminating any preheat period and reducing the hazards associated with lighting and carrying lit burners. It also reduces logistical burdens and safety hazards by burning less volatile JP-8 fuel instead of gasoline.
The use of electronically controlled combustion also decreases the production of hazardous emissions by maintaining correct fuel/air ratios. To eliminate the risk of electrical shock during use and maintenance and allow direct use of vehicle power, less than 90 Watts of 28 Volt DC power are needed to start and operate the MBU. Generator compatibility to the MBU is available by providing power converters as required in each kitchen application.
The MBU is currently in production and in military use worldwide.
